The cold comes yet again

by Sarah Luna

My roommate turned on the heater for the first time in this house this morning. I slept in tights and socks last night. As the cold comes, my skin retreats.

Goodbye, feet
Goodbye, ankles
Goodbye, calves and arms and fingers
Goodbye, neck and ears
Goodbye, skin
Hello, heavy socks that overlap tights
Hello, turtlenecks layered over shells
And tucking those turtlenecks into the tights
Hello, trench coat and scarves and mittens
Hello, boots and ice and slipping
Hello, gangrenous colors of Fall
